Nigerian Bottling Company products plus vitamin C - poisonous combination we ignorantly pay for thanks to NAFDAC

Are we really saying that sex between consenting adults is far more important an issue in Nigeria compared to the fact that Nigerian Bottling Company have been giving Nigerians what they dare not produce and give to human beings in other countries thanks to the obviously incompetent NAFDAC that couldn't carry out the simple tests that revealed this wickedness?

With the confirmation that these Nigerian Bottling Company products if taken with vitamin C become poisonous to the human body based on the composition of the Nigerian Bottling Company products why are Nigerians not calling for serious sanctions and compensations from Nigerian Bottling Company considering the fact that cancer has been mentioned as one of the consequences of these products based on the composition of the Nigerian Bottling Company products like Fanta and Sprite?

Or, are we just interested in sex and sex alone?

Could Nigerian Bottling Company have settled the mainstream media so that they keep this important issue in the back burner?

Assuming the answer to the last question is yes does it mean that the social media people have been settled as well?

Until we get our priorities right in Nigeria we will continue to have situations where foreigners see Nigerians as statistics that are needed to double or triple their investments no matter the number of Nigerians that get to die in the process.

So we are not just dealing with the issue of Nigeria being a dumping ground for all manner of products including those we can produce locally we now have to deal with the issue of being killed slowly and we even get to pay for being killed?

Court berates NAFDAC for negligence

A Lagos State High Court in Igbosere has charged the National Agency For Food and Drug Administration and control to always ensure due diligence in its certification of food products for the consumption of Nigerians.

Justice Adedayo Oyebanji of the court ordered NAFDAC to forthwith ensure that the Nigerian Bottling Company indicated on the bottles of its products, Fanta and Sprite, that the soft drinks could not be taken along with Vitamin C.

The judge made the order while delivering judgment in a suit filed against the NBC and NAFDAC by a Lagos-based businessman, Dr. Emmanuel Fijabi Adebo, and his company, Fijabi Adebo Holdings Limited.

The plaintiffs had approached the court seeking a declaration that the NBC  was “negligent and breached the duty of care owed to its valued customers and consumers in the production of contaminated Fanta and Sprite soft drinks with excessive benzoic acid and sunset additive.”

Adebo had, in a statement of claim filed through his lawyer, Abiodun Onidare, told the court how sometime in March, 2007, his  company purchased large quantities of Coca-Cola, Fanta Orange, Sprite, Fanta Lemon, Fanta Pineapple and Soda Water from the NBC and exported the products to the United Kingdom to be sold.

He, however, said when the products arrived the UK, they were tested to be substandard by the Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council’s Trading Standard Department of Environment and Economy Directorate.

He said the UK authorities, thereafter, destroyed the products, thereby causing him financial loss.

The court entered judgment in favour of the plaintiffs against NBC and NAFDAC.

Justice Oyebanji held, “It is imperative to state that the knowledge of the Nigeria Bottling Company that the products were to be exported is immaterial to its being fit for human consumption.

“The court is in absolute agreement with the learned counsel for the claimants that soft drinks manufactured by Nigeria bottling company ought to be fit for human consumption irrespective of color or creed.

“It is manifest that NAFDAC has been grossly irresponsible in its regulatory duties to the consumers of Fanta and Sprite manufactured by Nigeria bottling company.

“In my respective view, NAFDAC has failed the citizens of this great nation by its certification as satisfactory for human consumption, products which in the United Kingdom failed sample test for human consumption and which become poisonous in the presence of Ascorbic Acid ordinarily known as Vitamin C, which can be freely taken by the unsuspecting public with the company’s Fanta or Sprite.”

The judge added, “For the reasons herein adumbrated in this judgment, the court hereby orders as follows :

“That NAFDAC shall forthwith mandate the Nigeria Bottling Company to, within 90 days hereof, include on all the bottles of Fanta and Sprite soft drinks manufactured by the company, a written warning that the content of the said bottles of Fanta and Sprite soft drinks cannot be taken with Vitamin C as same becomes poisonous if taken with Vitamin C.”
